5 Eating
From take-it-to-go hot dogs to gourmet platters on white-clothed tables, little Reykjavík has an astonishing assortment of eateries. Loads of seafood and Icelandic or ‘New Nordic’ restaurants serve tried-and-true variations on local fish and lamb, but the capital is also the main spot for finding international eats.
Kolaportið Flea Market also has a section with traditional Icelandic foods.
oGrandi Mathöll Street Food $
(Map Google map; 577 6200; www.grandimatholl.is; Grandagarður 16; mains from 1200kr; 11am-9pm Mon-Thu, to 10pm Fri-Sun) There’s no neater encapsulation of Grandi’s rejuvenation than the transformation of this old fish factory into a pioneering street-food hall. Long trestle tables sit beside stalls selling a diverse range of lamb, fish and veggie delights; look out for the Gastro Truck, its succulent signature chicken burger has quite a jalapeño kick.
oSægreifinn Seafood $
(Map Google map; Seabaron; 553 1500; www.saegreifinn.is; Geirsgata 8; mains from 1500kr; 11.30am-10pm) Sidle into this green harbourside shack for the most famous lobster soup in the capital, or choose from a fridge full of fresh fish skewers to be grilled on the spot. Though the original sea baron sold the restaurant some years ago, the place retains its unfussy, down-to-earth charm.
oFlatey Pizza Pizza $
(Map Google map; 588 2666; www.flatey.pizza; Grandagarður 11; pizzas 1750-2650kr; 11am-10pm) Flatey raises pizza making to something akin to an art form. Its sourdough circles are made from organic wheat and are baked for just one minute at 500°C to keep the toppings tasty. It’s very hip and very classy. As you can’t book, be prepared to queue.
oGló Organic, Vegetarian $
(Map Google map; 553 1111; www.glo.is; Laugavegur 20b; mains 1000-2400kr; 11.30am-10pm; ) Join the cool cats in this airy upstairs restaurant serving fresh daily specials loaded with Asian-influenced herbs and spices. Though not exclusively vegetarian, it’s a wonderland of raw and organic foods, with a broad bar of elaborate salads, from root veggies to Greek.
Bakarí Sandholt Bakery $
(Map Google map; 551 3524; www.sandholt.is; Laugavegur 36; snacks 700-2700kr; 7am-7pm Sun-Thu, 6.30am-9pm Fri & Sat; ) Reykjavík’s favourite bakery is usually crammed with folks hoovering up the generous assortment of fresh baguettes, croissants, pastries and sandwiches. The soup of the day (1850kr) comes with delicious sourdough bread.
Brauð & Co Bakery $
(Map Google map; www.braudogco.is; Frakkastígur 16; 6am-6pm Mon-Fri, to 5pm Sat & Sun) Head for the building smothered in rainbow paint then queue for the locals’ tip for the best snúður (cinnamon buns) in town – watch Viking hipsters make them while you wait.
Frú Lauga Market $
(Map Google map; 534 7165; www.frulauga.is; Laugalækur 6; 10am-6pm Mon-Fri, to 4pm Sat; ) Reykjavík’s trailblazing farmers market sources its ingredients from all over the countryside, featuring treats such as skyr (Icelandic yoghurt) from Erpsstaðir, organic vegetables, rhubarb conserves, honey and meat. It also stocks a range of carefully curated international pastas, chocolates and wine.
Súpa Soup $
(Map Google map; Súpubarinn; www.facebook.com/supubarinn; Bergstaðastræti 4; mains 1500kr; noon-8pm Mon-Sat; ) Six pots of steaming soups make this snazzy downtown corner a top lunch spot for non-meat eaters. The place is entirely vegetarian (some options are vegan) and sourdough sandwiches and salads are served along with the signature soups.
